COPY, CUT AND PASTE TUTORIAL
We will first copy and paste this page to a word document. To do this: 1. Place cursor to left of "Copy..." in title above. Depress and hold down left mouse button and drag cursor to very bottom right of this page and then release left mouse button. (All copy should be highlighted. 2.
Then go
to “Edit” and click on “Copy”. You will need to remember the next two steps, because these instructions will disappear when you open the program just below. 3.
To
open a new word document, go to “Start”
(bottom left), go to “Programs”
and click on “Microsoft Word”. 4.
When the
new word document opens, go back up to “Edit”
and click on “Paste”. 5.
This
document should appear on the new word document. A.
Practice
highlighting the following words: First Monday Tomorrow Place the cursor at the beginning of the first
letter, depress and hold down the left mouse key, and drag the cursor to the end
of the word, and release the left mouse key.
The first word should look like this:
First (background will be black, not blue). B. Now, highlight “First” , go to “Edit”, click on “Copy”, place the cursor next to the “1” below, go back up to “Edit” and click on “Paste”. First Monday Tomorrow 1.
Repeat the same process with the next two words and the “2” and “3” below. 2. 3. Please notice
that when you used copy, the original word copied was left above. C. Now repeat the same drill, but this time when you go to “Edit”, use the “Cut” and “Paste” commands. First Monday Tomorrow 1. 2. 3. Notice that this time, when you clicked on “Cut”, the word was erased, then reappeared when you clicked on “Paste”. Copy, cut and paste, works exactly the same with
multiple words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, up to the entire document. D.
Now
let’s try a sentence. Move
the sentence below and place it in front of the “4” below using the
“copy” command. Now
is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their party. 4.
Now
move the same sentence and place it after the “5” below, using the “Cut”
command. 5.
Now,
let’s get wild and crazy and try an entire paragraph.
This time, to highlight the text you want to “Cut” or “Copy”, try
“triple-clicking” with the cursor
placed anywhere in the paragraph you wish to highlight.
Please use the one below. “Chickens are not the nuisance we’re trying to make them out to be,” said one planning commissioner, Gregory Black. “People who want chickens are going to take care of them.” After you “triple-click” to highlight, go to “Edit”, then “Copy”, then move the cursor to “6” and go back to “Edit” and click on “Paste”. 6. Rather than going to the “Edit” button, there are several other methods to copy, cut, and paste. Once you have highlighted the word, phrase, paragraph or page that you wish to copy or cut, you can use the follow: A. Use “Control” + “C” to copy. “Control” + “X” to cut. “Control” + “V” to paste. To use this system, you hold down the “Control” key and tap the C, X, or V key once to accomplish the desired task. Try copy and pasting the text of your choice beside the “7” using this method. Remember to highlight first.!!! 7. B. Again, after highlighting the desired text, you can “right click” the mouse, which will bring up the same menu that you see when you do to the “Edit” button. You can then “left click” on the desired action. This works well if you don’t wish to move the cursor all over the page. Try this now, placing the text you wish to copy following the “8” below.
8. C. Another option, after you have highlight the desired text, is to use the “Cut”, “Copy” and “Paste” icons on the tool bar at the top of the page. If you look to the right of the “Edit” Command four positions, you will see the “Tools” command. Just below the “Tools” command you will notice a “Scissors” icon, and icon with two pages displayed, and a “Clipboard” icon. In order, these icons will “Cut”, “Copy” and “Paste”. These icon will become active until you highlight text. At “9”, below, try copy and pasting text using this system. 9. D. And remember, you can always use the old tried and true system of highlighting and dragging. To do this, highlight the desired text, slide the cursor slowly back to the highlighted text until a white arrow appears, depress and keep depressed, the left mouse button, then slide the text until the gray bar is in the desired position, and release the left mouse button. Try this, moving two or three words of text to the “10” below. 10. That’s enough for now. When you close this program a menu will come up asking you if you wish to save your changes. Click on no. You can then use this exercise over again. If you click “Yes” it will save the document as you last saw it with all the changes you made.
